I did this painting as a performance on December 3rd, 2008. I used Rosco Vivid FX UV reactive stage paint.
The strobe effect in the video is from the led blacklight flicker meeting the video frame rate and not agreeing on everything.

To the Desert!

I'm headed out to the Black Rock Desert Tomorrow morning. I'll be living in Ol Bes the Bus for a month, working for two weeks on Basura Sagrada, the Burning Man Temple (you can read a news article here or visit the website here).
I'll be working with my friend Jack to build a few shelters first off, then I'll be a part of Camp I Am for Burning Man. I'm sticking around a few days afterward to help clean up, then I'm out of there.
I'm bringing my sketch books, a lot of paint, some great food and an open mind, going into my fifth year of attending burning man, I'm excited. I'll see you all soon.

SoHiTek Gets Inky In the Studio and On the Web

I've been working with Erik Carlson from SoHiTek on the record label's blog and the packaging for the new Double Plus Good Album.
We've been working together to design the album and the website, I'm providing tech support in a few areas, and he's designing the aesthetics for the projects. I created the font using Letterforms that a friend of Eric's drew, tracing them with my wacom tablet and converting them to glyphs using Fontlab Studio. It's called "Ashlee". I used the font to create the CD layout based on his idea. We designed it for a two color screen print using a single screen and masking.
Here are the registration tabs we put in place. He's printed five hundred of these using the Arigato Pack recycled packaging from Stumptown Printers.

Here's a screen shot of the new SoHiTek blog . It's hosted on Blogger.com (just like this site). Erik used photoshop to create a retro video game feel for the site, and I put all the pieces into place and created the site template. I'm especially liking the post containers. Check it out for yourself.

Rivers In Demand with the Epicocity Project in China

I've been working with the Epicocity crew the last several months to help create their Rivers in Demand Web Site, for their Kayak television series featuring Environmentally threatened rivers around the world.
As I write this, they are in China preparing their second major river run after just completing over two hundred miles on The Mekong River. I've been able to track their progress and help them keep their site as up-to-date as possible using some pretty cool new technology.

Their site is hosted on Blogger, and uses an interactive Google Map to give their location, which is determined by regular broadcasts from their Spot satellite transceiver. They are also placing Satellite phone calls from the back-country and recording the calls. We've been linking their media up to geographic locations using Google Maps rich editing interface, and they've been able to keep their site updated on an almost daily basis using Blogger's simple posting and labeling interface. We've smoothly adjusted to a major change in plans, and the site seamlessly reflected their transition from the Upper Salween descent they had planned to the Mekong River descent they chose instead when the Tibetan border refused them entrance.
Currently the Epicocity crew is in Lansing, preparing for the next trip down the Great Bend with a group of 28 international scientists, environmentalists and other parties interested in the future of China's challenged rivers.

Vulcan Mural

I spent the first half of February in California, hanging out with some friends and painting murals in two places. I don't have photos of the first mural yet, but I was able to snap some pics of the second mural, seen here. I painted this at Brent, Tommy and Shira's place in the old Vulcan Steel Refinery in East Oakland. Brent just moved in there this month, Shira runs her metal studio out of there, and its where the Yard Dogs Road Show, Tommy's band, practice. I had a great time painting this mural there, it was an inspiring place.

I made this animation after I walked over I-5 during rush hour. I stopped in the middle of the bridge and watched the cars coming toward me and came up with a new game I call Car Truck Suvy, or Suvy, Car, Truck Car, or any variation in that vein. Keep an eye out for the forthcoming rules.

The Growth of the Shadow City

When i was a senior in college, I took a work-study position in the Sculpture department so I could have twenty-four hour access to the studios, particularly the welding shop, where I was building my senior thesis, A Gifting Machine, from scrap metal. That project, along with other mechanical sculptures, got me thinking about building a miniature city out of scrap metal and old mechanical parts, with moving elements, little lights, maybe even a sewer system and smokestacks that spewed pollution. I also considered building a second city that used solar panels and living machines that recycled the waste.

I went back to Montana that winter to visit my family, and while I was home, my mom gave me a sketchbook. On the firstpage, I drew a complicated city-scape, the begining to sketch out my ideas for the model city.

When I got back to Eugene, I was working with the Craft Center at the University of Oregon to set up a hot-glass studio. That's where I met Jason Harris, the owner of Jerome Baker Designs and the person hired to design and build the glass studios.
Jason saw my illustrations and designs and hired me to do some designs for his new skate company, Jerome Baker Decks. One of those designs was based on my city sketch, he wanted a city-scape skate deck, so I went to Portland and spent three days sketching the city before returning to Eugene to draw the deck.

I had launched into a new exploration, without really becoming aware of it for quite some time. Most of the work I was doing at the time was exploring the shapes of cities, the way buildings come together and occupy space, the way roads intersect and the way that different elements like trees or fog broke up the lines of the city.

As I became aware of my studies I pushed them further and began exploring the quality of line that different elements of a city create. I moved to Portland that year, and began studying the jagged tree line that sat behind the tall, vertical, smooth lines of the buildings. I also focused on the long horizontal lines that bridges and roadways created, and the way that the fog would descend on the city, creating gradients against the hard lines of the city. I looked at the way the clouds would descend into the trees, making multiple layers of jagged lines appear where before there was only a smooth, deep greenish-black fading to blue in the distance with a single jagged line at the edge.

At this point I was diving deep into the shape and perspective of a city, learning and progressing and developing my own distinctive look. All the while, I was simultaneously looking for these same shapes and lines in nature, discovering them at the base of tree, in fallen logs in the woods, or in the way a river carves through a canyon. I was so focused on my studies, I was unaware of where they were taking me, and had almost completely forgotten how I'd arrived there.

Just about the time I was becoming bored with my linear studies, and turning my attention from the shapes and lines toward color and light, I went to Burning Man again for the fourth time and saw something incredibly inspirational.
I was walking home one night from across the playa, strolling along the Esplanade for the first time that week, looking at the different theme camps set up along Black Rock City's principle boulevard.
One of the camps I passed was quite, this must have been their night out, but they left their stage illuminated for passerbys. The stage was a simple design, a translucent backdrop with lights behind projected through a cardboard cut-out to create a beautiful shadow of a forest, with grass, mushrooms, flowers and some trees. It was amazing for its elegance and simplicity, by no means the first of its kind, but it was the first time I'd really noticed the technique.

I rode home from Burning Man with two friends from Portland, who also happened to be two of the principle organizers for the Portland Burning Man Decompression. One of them, Shira, was planning the artwork for the event, and along the two day trip we talked a lot about the possibilities. I brought up the stage that had inspired me, and mentioned that I'd like to try something similar with a city skyline.

Back in Portland, I wrote the idea up and did a concept sketch, sending it off to Shira as a proposal, but also sending it to the Rebuilding Center, a construction materials re-use center near my house.

One afternoon I was hanging out looking through the Rebuilding center's piles of cool scraps and parts, and I noticed a ray of evening sun cutting through an upper window and casting a glowing circle on the wall a few feet off the floor. I began setting objects that I picked out in front of the ray of light, and looking at the different shadows they cast. That was when I noticed that three dimensional objects cast much more interesting and dynamic shadows than cardboard cut-outs; when you move a three dimensional object in the light, the shadow changes shape and perspective, unlike two-dimensional objects that only change perspective.

I pitched my idea to the Rebuilding Center, and told them a bit about the Decompression Party. The Rebuilding Center provided a lot of materials for free to an Burning Man art installation I worked on with Shrine and Tuk Tuk, the Tasseograph Tea Temple.

The Tea temple was also being set up at the Decompression, so it occurred to me the Rebuilding Center might donate materials for my city scape. They were into the idea, and they let me go through the Rebuilding Center and pick out materials that I thought would work.

I installed the Shadow City at the Portland Decompression and it was a huge hit. I used a twenty foot timber that was lying around the warehouse where we hosted the event, and several lights that I brought down myself. during the event, I would go behind the screen and move the lights, swooping them through the city and changing the perspective and shape of the shadow cast on the screen.

After the party, I packed up the city onto a palette and left it at the warehouse. I began looking for other opportunities to install the city, and came across the Regional Arts and Culture Council's call for submissions for the Portland Building Exhibit space. I looked into the requirements and specifics and the space was a perfect match for the shadow city. I put together a proposal, using photos from the Decompression, and submitted it in December.

Last weekend, the RACC notified me that the Shadow City was selected and scheduled to be installed November 10th through December 5th in the lobby of the Portland Building in downtown Portland, home of the famous Portlandia sculpture and many of the City of Portland's offices.

So now I have 11 months to build the Shadow City. I already have most of the materials I need from the Rebuilding center's first donation, but I will also be looking for other grants to provide matching funding or donations. I'd like to incorporate some of my original ideas, from back in the Sculpture department at the University of Oregon. I'd like to get some mechanics, perhaps electrical, or potentially pneumatic, and I'd like to look into moving lighting systems, like the kinds that green houses use.

A Little Bit About Skuzblog

Skuzblog began as a search for the free website. Not just any free website, though, I wanded a site that would host a blank slate for interactive media. Most of the sites I had seen would give you a template to fill in, or require you to sport their banner.
In my search, I was introduced to Blogger, a company that Google had just purchased.
I found a lot of other services, and learned a lot about php, css and xml, as well as honed my flash skills a bit more.
Because I had the site, I began using it to post my work, stories and activities. I have posted everything from songs I created to political commentaries, animated drawings and movies to photographs of live painting performances.
Skuzblog is in its third year now, and its been incorporated under the broader wing of Gabe's Imagination. It continues to be my regular report of what's going on here.

Thanks to Robert Genn for publishing my question about digital mediums on his site, The Painters Key.
I just started using a Wacom tablet, after watching artist Andrew Jones at Emerg-n-See, The Bass Nectar Underground Communication Tour, and most recently at Diversion, working with a Wacom Tablet and Corel Painter to do live painting on a projection screen.
Tonight I did a show With Randolf Mctools, Sleep, Chicharones and Animal Farm at Berbati's Pan in downtown Portland.

Moon City Live Drawing Video

I made this video using Ambrosia's Snapz screen recording program while I worked on my Wacom Tablet in Adobe Photoshop. I spent one hour working on this drawing, then exported the movie and sped it up in iMovie to a 12 minute clip. I split the clip into two parts to fit it on YouTube, so You can watch it here. Enjoy!

House Res 799 to Impeach Dick Cheney

In case you missed it, last week Congressman and Presidential Canidate Dennis Kucinich was able to get his bill, HR 799, making the case for impeachment of Dick Cheney, through the house, at which point it was sent to the House Judiciary Committee.

Vice President Dick Cheney is a criminal, and the democratic party's failure to bring impeachment charges against him is a travesty and a true threat to the security of this nation. If Cheney is allowed to continue his criminal practices while maintaining the office of vice president of the United States, the entire nation is implicated in his crimes.
If you have not heard about this on TV, or read it in your newspaper, do not be surprised. All you have to do is google HR 799, or visit youTube to watch the charges being brought against Dick Cheney. YOu will see that Kucinich is not bringing this up to pick a fight or bicker about the illegal war in Iraq, but more importantly, Kucinich is making his best effort to keep us out of WAR IN IRAN.
That's right, the impeachment of Dick Cheney is intended to prevent the Vice President from bringing us into another war, which he has been publicly pushing for by lying on national media, before his term is over next year.
I'm not going to site any news sources in this clearly biased statement, if you want to know the facts, please google it and read for yourself. I'm just trying to raise awareness, and making an effort to support Kucinich in his politically unpopular move.
What really gets me is the way national media are writing off the Republican votes to impeach as "political maneuvering". The media is unwilling to admit that Cheney is a criminal and the republicans realize it. They aren't voting to dissuade the democrats or tarnish their reputation, they voting to get that criminal out of office before he drives us all into a global conflict of unprecedented scale.
If you think its possible that Dennis Kucinich is doing that right thing, that Cheney needs to be held accountable, or that impeachment is one of our last remaining tools in the pursuit of peace, than please email Dennis Kucinich and let him know. He is collecting emails from around the country to present to the House Judiciary Committee, where HR 799 currently rests.

Our Pre-Burn Adventure last year

Clif, Jack and I rolled out to the playa early last year to set up Camp I Am and help with the wireless network. During this first part, you can watch as the city gets built, art projects go up, and Jack climbs a 60' antennae to adjust the microwave dish during a windstorm.
On ladies night we visited the man, who was undergoing an illumination test while lying down. We also visited the Belgian Waffle in construction and met Nick, Bamboo Barry's son who hung out with us until the burn.

Live paintings from the last few months done during Hip-Hop Anonymous and Portland Underground shows, also from the ASR Tradeshow in San Diego last fall, and the rest paintings from my studio. Twenty paintings in all fill the walls of the restaurant.
The show opens June 7 with a reception from 5 to 9pm, where I'll be working on a new live painting.
Mostly paintings of Portland, acrylic on wood, but also some other subject matter thrown in there. Come on down and check it out.

The Freemont Bridge

Portland's Freemont Bridge has been a fascination of mine since well before I moved to the city. I'm amazed by the architecture, the cathedral-like underbelly and its gracefully intertwined layers.

The bridge was completed in 1973, and holds several distictions: The arched portion of the bridge was assembled on nearby Swan Island, then floated downstream and lifted into place. At the time, this was the world record for the heaviest lift.

In addition, the Freemont Bridge is the world's second largest tiered arch bridge, coming in just behind a Chinese bridge over the Yangtzi River. Unfortunately, they do not allow pedestrian traffic on the bridge, denying Portlanders the opportunity to appreciate its' spectacular view at their own pace.

Finally, the Freemont Bridge was an expensive bridge, costing over six times what its downstream neighbor, the Marquam Bridge, cost less than ten years prior. The Marquam bridge was considered a blight on the river by many, so the Freemont Bridge was designed in large part aesthetically, and at a substantially increased cost.

Whole Earth Festival Live Painting

This was a live painting at the 2007 Whole Earth Festival in Davis, CA the city where my brother lives and goes to school.
I painted this saturday night at the DJ stage, where DJ Omni, Kozee, and Brother played. Brother's set was a great topper to the night, and it wasn't until I finished the painting, gave it to my brother, left town on the train, checked my email, and looked at the photos from Matt that I realized how it all fit together. Look real closely and you can see the two robot pilots sitting side-by-side in the cockpit.
Big thanks to Tao for helping me put this together.

A Sensible Approach to Graffiti

Conventional graffiti abatement programs advocate immediate and utter removal of all graffiti, arguing that one tag invites others. A clean wall, on the other hand, makes graffiti artists and taggers forget what they were doing and they usually go home.

Portland takes a straight-up, hard-line approach to graffiti. Here is a link to the city of Portland's graffiti policy.
You'll notice its a violation to leave unsolicited markings on your public building, in public view, for more than ten days.
The basic policy is remove all graffiti as soon as it happens so it won't result in 'social deterioration'. Anyone who has tried to wash paint off a wall, especially enamel paints, knows that it can be extremely difficult and takes a lot of elbow grease and some powerful solvents. On the other hand, anyone who has tried to tag a wall knows that it is extremely easy and merely requires a can of spray paint or a paint marker and a few flicks of the wrist.
That said, Portland, and many other cities that employ a similar graffiti abatement program, are fighting a loosing battle. As quickly as they can paint over or scrub off the tags, along comes another eager artist, excited by the prospect of a blank canvas.

Banksy may actually be on to something here. More than just a tongue in cheek invitation to tag the holy hell out of a wall, this image hints at the most likely sustainable solution to graffiti problems.

If we want to find a more effective graffiti abatement program, we need only turn to our northern neighbors, specifically the city of Vancouver, BC.
Rather than focus exclusively on Graffiti removal, Vancouver employs graffiti artists to paint murals, providing the walls, the paints, and a small stipend for the organizers. This may seem counter-intuitive at first, paying the criminals to do there thing, but in fact, it seems to have a profound effect: walls that were once plagued by tagging and graffiti are now decorated with murals.
To understand how this works, consider why taggers are throwing their names up on private property in the first place. They want recognition, and they have a disrespect for the property they are marking. Now, imagine that same wall is covered in a mural done by some of the city's most respected graffiti artists.
Suddenly, the lone tagger in the night is inclined to respect the hard work of their peers (the graffiti artists who painted the mural)and would certainly no longer desire recognition if they were to paint their own initials over the mural. In fact, many would-be taggers would be more persuaded by the threat of expulsion from the graffiti communities than by the legal repercussions should they be caught.

The City of Vancouver, BC graffiti abatement program encourages graffiti artists to organize into registered groups that contract with the city to paint murals in areas with tagging problems.

You Don't Know Jack

Even if you think you know Jack, you don't know Jack.

I thought Jack was riding his bike through the California Desert, wearing a Tuxedo, on his way to Albequerque.
That's because the last time I saw Jack, the only clothing he had with him was a tuxedo, and he was traveling by bicycle through the southern bay area. He had lots of art supplies, some bike tools, some camping gear, and his tuxedo, and he said he was on his way to Albequerque.
Well, just as I was starting to think I knew Jack, well, at least what he was doing (I've been telling people he's on his way to Albequerque wearing a tuxedo on a bicycle), just when I was getting comfortable with the idea, Jack had to go and drop me a line and tell me something new.
Turns out Jack lost his pants, so know he is riding his bike to Albequerque with a tuxedo top, but he doesn't have any tuxedo pants anymore. can't really call it a tuxedo without pants.
I'm betting he'll find some new pants soon, some really sweet ones.

I've got some paintings hanging at Bridging Boro on the corner of Interstate and Alberta in North Portland. If you want to check out some art, either paintings or boro-silicate glass, be sure to stop by. They just opened up their glass shop this month and they haven't posted regular business hours yet, but if you show up and nobody is out front, ring the bell and they'll come out from the studio to let you in.

Live Painting at Berbati's

Been doing a lot of live paintings at Berbati's Pan on Southwest 3rd and Burnside in Portland. Aaron Rogosin came down last Thursday and took some photos:

Putting the Studio to Use

Its good to be in a studio, and have this facility to use for different projects. Right now I'm working with a group to develop their ideas about a website, I'm doing concept illustration for a 3D animation, I'm working on two websites, doing some random illustration jobs, painting a lot, and recently just opened my studio up to an outside project.

I've thought a lot about the importance of creativity to Dr. Martin Luther King's teachings. If you have any doubt of its prominence in his philosophy, reread his I have a dream speech and count the number of times he calls on creativity.
Creativity is not just making new things and abandoning the old, it is often looking at what we already have and finding a new life in it.
For this reason it is not enough to stand around waiting for some hand in the sky to push the reset button and cast you in a different lot, its time to look at what you have and a create a Jubilee in your life today.

Solstice painting

This painting is the result of a long day and a long night of work between Jack and I. We used plywood scraps from around the neighborhood and cut out the design in the morning, loaded it all up and took it up the street to the Mississippi Cathedral to set it up for the evening.

We spent the rest of the afternoon running around and getting supplies, including blacklights for the UV reactive paint we used, then started painting at nine when the Sol Ball started. We worked through the night until about 4 am when we called it done. Here's the sketch we were working from:

One of them was new, from Union Pacific, advertising that they were

and the other was old
a mix of rail lines and rust spots
covered in lettering from up and down the coast

Gasp
And many I couldn't read
encoded in the aesthetic
The Pigeons were also watching the trains go by
from their linear perch atop the lights
like moss on the oaks of the Oregon woods
but moss that moves in fluttering shudders
everytime a truck goes under.

Grand Canyon Voyage

It's a hard place to capture, even a hard place to place, as it lives outside of possibility, a place so harsh that to survive, you must engage the world as a porcupine, an agave, a raptor, a barrel cactus bristling with anticipation of external contact while patiently awaiting the rains that come in sheets and rub you from your minuscule perch upon a rocky precipice.
The land in the southwest is marked by particular geographic features that are the result of worlds prior to this one. Long ago, the world was an ocean, and beneath its waves, layers of sediment slowly trickled to the bottom, stacking themselves into a thick mud containing all the signatures of its time.

When the world shifted, the waters receded, the armored plates of our iron core floated abruptly into each other and wrinkled like the corners of the eyes in a aged smile. The rocky mountains rose from the depths of the sea, creating a rugged spine across our continent, and at their base, the Colorado plateau was formed when the ancient seabed was thrust upward.
When humans arrived in this new world thousands of years ago, they were greeted by an eagle. They had just crossed the pacific ocean, island hoping for hundreds of generations as one island disappeared and the next appeared, until they arrived at the rocky coasts of this world.

The eagle tested them, piercing their hearts with an arrow, but these first humans did not flinch, and the eagle allowed them passage into this land. The first humans to walk this new world crossed it upwards, downwards, east and west, living in the highlands, the lowlands, the ice and snow, the tropical forests and finally, after generation upon generation of nomadic life, came to the great southwest to build their final home in the harshest desert they knew.

It was by choice that these people came to live in a land so hard that life becomes the great uncertainty, a land that required them to live on faith and diligence to a universal plan, an assurance that the world would continue to be as it should provided its occupants live within its fold.

As I descended into the canyon, pushed by the force that powers Las Vegas, with no hope of pushing back upstream against it, I was engulfed by stone walls a mile high offering no route to their pinnacles. This is the fortress of the earth, and I am pulled into it with an uncertainty that smells of fear but leaves the sweet taste of anticipation lingering.

Humans have indeed tamed this wild river, or as Floyd Dominy said, "put the river in business", we've built two concrete walls that hold back its flow and harness it's energy, we've spanned it by foot bridge and road, and we've devised resilient craft to navigate its swift waters. We have guide books that detail each of the side canyon's perilous hikes and describe the hydraulic formations that have drowned many a life. Our great birds of the air can swiftly pluck us from the fray, and our satellites above guide us with precision by passing on our signals with ease. Yet despite this great feat of our minds, or persistent domination of the natural law, as I floated into the mouth of marble canyon, two hundred and twenty five miles upstream from the nearest road, I suddenly felt very alone, and firmly in the grasp of a force much greater than human imagination.

Each day in the canyon became a contract, wherein I, the dutifully informed, became subject to the actions of the universe. In exchange, I was given awareness of my place among them, a human, a wanderer, and observer and an actor, the spirit of love an laughter, alive to sing praises and vibrate in harmony with the world around me. I had no power to change my universe, to construct my reality, to place a phone call and lift my spirit from the depths of the canyons, to grow my food, to build my home, all this was decided for me by the current, the waves and the eddies, the shape of the rock walls towering over me, the spinning of the stars around the anchor Polaris, the decision of the sun each morning to shine its radiant glory upon my face, the slow and steady departure of the moon from the sky and its gradual return, the first wisps of cirrus clouds drifting across a sliver of blue sky, and coming around the corner to find the canyon blocked by a deep, dark grey wall of wind and water traveling my direction. These were the forces that conscripted my participation in an obligatory manner resulting in my survival and emergence from deep within the earth. Within a few days it became quite clear that this contract was not optional and that a failure to honor it would entail certain death.

Life within the canyon, in the desert, is regulated by necessity, not desire. The frigid water that carves through solid rock was once the life blood of the canyon, depositing silt upon the shores to create deltas and beaches hospitable to human form, carrying a multitude of fish and other life along its boulder-strewn path and offering food and nourishment to all those that lived by its waters. But now that we have put the river in business, its wild and unpredictable floods have been tamed, its silt is sifted by the sieve of engineers, and its waters run a life-less, frigid course from the depths of lake powell.

Although evidence of prehistoric human life within the canyon exists in places like Nankaweip with its masterfully built stone granaries and Unkar delta's ruins, life in the post dam canyon with out the aid of modern technology seems impossible. Their is little food in the desert to be found in adequate quantities to satisfy a human's metabolism, and the few camps that remain provide scant evidence of agricultural opportunity.

Today, life in the canyon is a transit, from one dam to the next, with the concrete assurance of safety from its torrential floods. All food must be carried into the canyon, and all waste carried out to maintain a semblance of an ecosystem. A permit holder is the government sanctioned pioneer of a well-trodden trail through its walls, and an expedition the predictably equipped crew carrying out its legislated duty to observe and protect this great wonder of the world. We are not here to be the canyon, to play a part in its life, we are here as documentarians, recording the world we separate our selves from with layers of polypropylene, neoprene, vinyl, nylon, gortex, polyethylene, polyester and polyurethane, and returning to broadcast our results.

As we travel, our bodies are worn, despite our protective covering, and they begin to look like the canyon walls themselves. The desert consumes, slowly and surely, with a defiance of all protective layers, spines and extrusions, the solid form of stone becomes fluid with the wind and the waves, and our skin becomes cracked and separated like the drying mud. As we flow downstream in our steadily degrading rubber rafts, our food gets soggy, then moldy, rancid and spoiled. Our clothing frays, our bedrolls grow irreparably soiled, our water filter laden with sediment, and our spirit of perseverance is worn through by the relentless tide of the elements. Yes, humans have lived here, in the heart of the desert for thousands of years. Many of them have come and gone, entire cities packed up and disappeared, perhaps because over time, their spirits were also worn through, but some have stayed, some remain perched high on the mesas. living simply and harmoniously through it all, unafraid of the wind and rain, unchallenged by the scarcity of food and the rarity of water, the Hopi, their name meaning 'peaceful', adherent to the the universal plan, compliant to the way things are.

As I emerge from the canyon, tired, no exhausted, scraped, cut, torn and bleeding, my first view is of the Hualapai reservation town of Peach Springs. i see rows upon rows of delapidated, fenced in box homes of sheet rock and commercial negligence, the bare bones of what the government can provide and still consider 'aid', a redskins flag hanging in one window and a fence around each and every yard, government issued as an answer to escalating violence. We continue on, leaving the dirt road for concrete and asphalt, confronted by a string of billboards offering lavish and decidant rewards for our participation in this new contract, we continue over the dam that holds back the mighty river, a fortress of engineered perfection, standing in defiance of nature, an act of water conservation that stops the river and transfers its force into powerlines as thick as your arm, strung across steel titans that receed in rows towards the glowing light on the horizon, the spotlights projecting miles into the sky to bounce of the growing clouds and back onto the illuminated strees of las vegas.

I am now aware that I passed through the canyon as an act of will, but survived as an act of grace. I delved into the depths of the canyon seeking adventure, stories, documentation of this wild and inhospitable chasm of the earth, and I returned solemn, aware and akward in my former surroundings. For nearly a month of my life, I signed a contract with the universe, allowing me safe passage through treacherous waters, and I fulfilled my terms with adherance to the order of the universe and I paid the price through a fundamental reconstruciton of my heart. I asked for the power of the canyon, for the healing of its walls, i listened to the stories of its history and heard the tales of its futures, I obeyed its irrefutable command with the diligence of a feather in the wind, and I returned knowing my place in this world is small, on a narrow rocky ledge that I must struggle to cling to, growing as the water and sun provide and standing tall and proud, knowing that all is right and good and the universe is unfolding with certainty, exactly as it should.

Life on a River

I'm on my way to the Grand Canyon to spend the next month living on a fourteen foot inflateable raft on the Colorado River. I'm bringing a book for the trip with walnut and sumi dyed pages, a set of my pens, some water colors and a book binding kit. I'm also bringing my research from the last few weeks on Hopi and Anasazi mythology and "The Book Of The Hopi" by Frank Waters. Oh yeah, and my flute, I've got my flute with me. Kokapeli and I can play a duet.

I'll be rafting the Colorado River all next month, living on a boat in the Grand Canyon. Human civilization has been around the grand canyon for the last 4000 years, in one form or another. I've been researching Hopi and Anasazi mythology so I can journal on the trip with an appreciation for the history of the place.

In an age where corporations hold the legal title of "persons" and are affected as such by the governing documents of our nations,
In a place where convoluted, subdivided, multi-tiered horizons separate the earth from the sky,
Tangible reminders of forces much larger than ourselves pull power lines like puppet strings and require all vehicular and pedestrian movement to comply.

These buildings are titans, these highways reach out like the tentacles of scylla.
Pavement is our blood, like a bird to the air, above us, below us, and even between us.
We are awoken by, fed by, addicted by, inspired by, beaten by and pleasured by these corporate, constructed, concrete, rebar, silicon, petroleum, and asphalt demi-gods.
How can we, mere mortals, hope to affect the affections or reject the restrictions of something so impossibly large? Only a titan can conquer a titan.

This was a great opportunity for me to get some exposure, share what I love to do, and talk with a lot of wonderful people about art.
i started the painting friday night, worked a few hours on it, then went to bed and woke up just before sunrise to start again. I worked off and on through the day, then at sunset I began working again and worked straight through the night until sunrise. It was wonderful painting to the music and i loved having all the people come by and check out what I was doing, engaging in the story i was creating about the event, the intention.

Wiki-Governance

I was talking with some friends a while back and we decided it would be cool to have a wiki version of our US Constitution, where individuals could log in and change the constitution however they liked. It might not be a practicle form of governance, but we thought it would be a fun way to see just how people would change the document. Afterall, half the fun of wiki pages is seeing how articles get changed back and forth when they concern 'hot' issues.
Just recently, I found Congresspedia, a wiki on our US Congress. Check it out. For starters, I reccomend looking up your state senator.

Jack and the Brothers Shaughnessy

Just returned from a bike trip with Jack and my brother Mickey. We rode a five day loop from Eugene, to the coast, south to Bandon, then turned inland and North. We ended our trip on the road to Roseburg where a small mechanical problem with my derailure that I had ignored turned into a large mechanical problem at the top of a downhill. I skidded through my back tire when my rear wheel locked up, and bent up a few other parts of my bike. When a pick-up headed to Creswell pulled over, we took the ride and finished the day with a ten mile ride home. Now I plan to spend some time at the community bike shop, Eugene Bicycle Works, fixing my bike. Enjoy these pictures from Jack's camera:

this photo by my mom makes me realize my artistic vision is probably more the result of a lifetime of influence rather than just a localized response to a certain enviroment or mental state that I may be in at the time of the drawing.

The detail that did it for me was the birds flying off the building. Without ever seeing this photo, I drew those same birds on the grain tower in portland.

leaving davis

I'm leaving davis on the train tommorrow night for eugene.
california was nice because I could do anything I wanted
and make anything happen
because thats what people do in california.
I found harbin hotsprings, where I'd like to spend some time
working and relaxing

I was an illustrator and a photographer and a stone mason stepbuilder
and I met tons of people and did tons of things and where else could I do that
but california. everything in california is tons. California is tons of food and tons of money. california is tons of information and tons of energy.
California is just big, lots, tons, huge, plenty, more, apt, and then sum.
Seems like everyone else is just begining and california's already done.
But it'll be nice to get out of this place and leave this time. You can't do anything small in california.
Some times a body's got to get real small.

delta of venus workshops

starting in november, I will be running workshops everyother wednesday at the Delta of Venus cafe, 122 B st in Davis, Ca. The crafty art craft skill shops will be held at 4 o'clock, and of course, will be free.
The first week will be photocopy transfers, teaching you how to print a photocopy onto any surface.
The next skillshop we will be teaching the printing stage of silk screen printing.
the final wednesday in november will be a bookbinding workshop.
Currently I am finding skillshops for the other two wednesdays in the month.

davis, ca

I made it down the coast just fine. no time. (means no mass)
now I'm in Davis, on a scavenger hunt.
I use my bike to commute around the area.
last weekend it was up to the full belly farm for hoes down
an organic farming harvest festival
so joe craven play, of the grismond group.
the reason I went was to meet up with david kupfer, who invited me at the burn
after I set up my shelter, I discovered I was camping right next to him
out of 3000 people, that's a little crazy. no such thing as a coincidence.
back track
when I got to davis, I followed my nose into the espresso roma
two things occured:
I was given a sticker for daviswiki.org
and I saw a poster for a free jason webeley show at the Delta of Venus
on the wiki, I found out about the bike church and the domes
i went to the delta and saw a poster for a party at the domes
i went looking for the bike church and the domes
I found both in the same place and was invited to the party
I left for a volunteer training at the craft center
where I will be able to weld, use the glass torches, sew, work in the wood shop
develop photos, silk screen and throw pottery.
I came back to the domes and met many great people at the party
everyone dressed in white, playing croquet and drinking gin and tonics
fire spinning till late in the night
then on to the harvest festival
I rode out with five guys who had taken a train over from berkeley
with thier various bikes.
they showed me how to bike from davis to the bay along several routes
when we stopped for lunch
and told me resources for my book
the book on bike touring
on a budget
sustainably, a guide, a diy, a tool for empowerment
then the harvest festival, I ran into many of my friends from the domes
and talked to david about writing, among other things
he's writing a guide to sustainability for teenagers
been working on it for a while now and wants me to read over his outline
this is good, it means I can help him with his work
and he wants to help with my book.
the next morning at the big breakfast I was invited to raft cache creek
cause someone dropped out
I showed up at the put in and they gave me an inflatable kayak to float in
I felt a bit like when Jack and I were driving the big rig to the burn
no money, no power except optimism, and here I was
floating up side streams and through the sunny afternoon.
Like driving that six speed diesel down the highway, but different.
Jack understands.
Off the river I started lending a hand again with clean-up.
the people that were left were all very close, but very open
and good to talk to.
I hitched a ride with my bike into town that night with one of them.
the next afternoon I was back at the delta of venus
hanging out and sipping coffee
talking with Justin, one of the domers
he called his mom and put me on the phone
she is working on a mural, tile mosaic
on the UCSF campus
and wants help, has a place I can stay.
I'm biking over to the bay for the first time friday morning
to meet up with Pyrs at the Synergy co-op
and to check out Andy's farm, Hidden Villa
and to go to the Burn decompression street fair sunday
then its back to Davis monday for a craft center safety review
and again tuesday
then the bay? maybe, but I have to be in Davis every thurs
for work at the craft center.
I still need to find a good time to hop on the bike and go the other direction
out to horton's farm where coy is living, outside Sacramento
and I plan a break to go up to shasta city and work for a week.
Need to print some of the photos from my trip
and today's project is to bind the outline of the book
into a journal, with marked sections and lots of blank pages
for each section, so I can travel on my bike
with an organized journal for taking notes
and documenting stories
and recording the tricks and tactics that make this possible.
Journal full, time to write.
